"Time-lapse video of Joey Pang painting a detailed Chinese ink-brush tiger used for the 'Poised' tattoo artwork, a shot of the finished body art was released last week. To capture the organic brush movements and line fractures this tiger was created on specialist calligraphy paper prior to the session. However all other elements - rocks, trees, shading, etc. - were freehanded during the appointment. This freehand mash-up method allows for its focal point to retain authentic brush strokes as initially crafted with the surrounding features tailored to their placement on a unique 'canvas'. Although highly detailed the overarching principle for such compositions is to allow use of negative or inverted spacing to form part of the art itself. In short the client's skin tone and empty spaces are integral, as opposed to shading and or filling in every area as is so common in other styles. This Chinese painting technique is a mixture between traditional aesthetics as well as ink-brush calligraphy, utilizing stronger black throughout with truly customized proportions in consideration of placement and physiology, e.g. muscle movements, skin tone.
